Stevio...LA LA Lovin' It?

I'm British-born Chinese from Bristol, UK. I’m LA-based. I’m a hip hop aficionado. After 15 years in London I moved to LA to pursue a new career and outlook on life.

Back in the 80s I was a DJ. In the 90s I contributed to the world's first street style exhibition at London's Victoria & Albert Museum. In 2011, I had my first interviews published. Today, I’m keeping busy with music, art, photos and writing.

"The Warriors" and marketing hyper moves

I wore my "The Warriors" t-shirt I got years ago on a visit to LA. I remembered hearing that a console video game was being released of the 1979 film, but little did I know it would be another amazing game by Rockstar. CLICK HERE to watch the Warriors game video clip. Ill-er than ill.

What started me investigating and downloading stuff? A push email from adidas promoting its involvement in the video game. After a little surfing I came across another adidas collaboration. This time with the film version of the Dogtown story, already documented in 2002. Zzzzz? Anyway, adidas has linked its Originals line with the film as a marketing campaign. So, film and video games are pretty much one in the same now?! Definately, all commercially up for grabs! The latest video game debate is "how much to charge for in-game advertising placements?" Let's wait and see.

"MC stands for Mic Control", Eric B

The essence of MCing is in the freestyle battle. I remember going to the New Music Seminars 1987-8 in New Yawk City. Those had the illest DJ and MC battles...remember the Melle Mel vs. Mikey D battle...ooohhh. Melle Mel lost the vote, but still stormed off with the NMS Title Belt. And he's a big bloke!

So, when I hear the Roll Call battles on Power 106FM it reminds me of less commercial periods, and also manages to capture the real deal of MCing. No holds barred, no PC stances. Just street slang and disses. Jeeves from Murder Valley hit 20 weeks as the battle winner; this week his challenger was Rash from LA. CLICK HERE to hear the MC Battle. Oh, and check out the DJ Felli Fell version of California Love, Zapp/Tupac after the battle. Version! Too cool.

Stevio goes to Japan

I couldn't sleep so I got up watched Bullitt with Steve McQueen on DVD till 5am. That is a fresh film. And catch the Lalo Schifrin soundtrack. Hot. The man behind the Dirty Harry sound too! Check Jacqueline Bisset too. Ummm. Hot!

At 3am I get a call. It's a +31 number which everyone knows is Holland, so I answer ;-) Code magazine say "we love the photos and will use them!" Cool. Another 15 minutes of fame?! Later, I get an email asking if the photos can be used on a Dutch run style website. It's all Japanese street style (which is pretty easy pickings), but still it's novel. I like the site so check the link on my blog.

"Hello!" or "Konnichi wa!" if you are visiting from JapaneseStreets.com
