Stevio...LA LA Lovin' It?

I'm British-born Chinese from Bristol, UK. I’m LA-based. I’m a hip hop aficionado. After 15 years in London I moved to LA to pursue a new career and outlook on life.

Back in the 80s I was a DJ. In the 90s I contributed to the world's first street style exhibition at London's Victoria & Albert Museum. In 2011, I had my first interviews published. Today, I’m keeping busy with music, art, photos and writing.

Claw Money rocks the spot with Nike Blazers/Kendo

The crowd tonight were hottt! I love them Hollywood girls, baby! The b-boys came out, the girls represented and Claw Money was a sweetheart as she jammed with her crew. Lovebug Starski threw down an awesome old skool DJ-set on his CD decks.

Slick Rick, Schooly D (I'm liking this Chuck D version), Pete Rock and CL, Joeski Love....it was just ill. Like the P. Bros said, Starski throws down hard.

Ah, one-two...My name is Biz Markie

It's a balmy night in Los Angeles, and rather than turn on the air-con I slip on the adidas shelltoes and tread a path towards the Hollywood backwaters. There's a party going on and the legendary Biz Markie is DJing...Word!

Scion sponsored this event for the Independent Television Festival...I have no idea why I was invited, but fo' sure I was going! And with 12" vinyl in hand...'No Body Beats The Biz', and a poster from photographer, George DuBose, I went and got my Biz autograph for the collection...Ol' Skool Stevio!

Rock Steady Crew...Happy 30th birthday!

This week, starting today, all the b-boys are busting out the fresh gear and celebrating with the architects of hip hop at the Rock Steady Crew 30th anniversary in New Yawk City.

In a flashback moment, I remember talking with people about the 20th anniversary in Rock Steady Park...yep, 10 years have passed by, just like that! B-boy for life!

The line up is awesome with so many parties organized and cultural events to educate that I really wish I'd organized it to be there...even the commercial stuff is cool with adidas on Wooster St. handing the store over to the Rock Steady...invite only, peeps!

Buff Monster series #1

Today was hot and sweaty. Too hot to be queuing up for limited edition toys, but I was excited to see the line on Melrose and I had some time to kill. Until the Munkey King store dude said there was a slim chance they'd sell out before we got in. There were two lines: one for buying; one for signing. Now that's an operation for you.

I happily went to Monterey Park for dim sum...got there too late, but that's another story! So I'm back on Melrose by 5.30pm and Barracuda has its Buff Monster 'happy ending' show. So, I roll up and see the t-shirts and various toys, but only one boxed set of the whole series #1. $25 @ x12 toys = $300. So I grab it up and start chatting to the Mindstyle business development fella who's there. That's the company that produced the toys through a licensing deal.

Of the 12 toys, there is one of each of the nine toys, including a secret toy. The remaining three toys are repeats. Of my repeats I got another secret toy. A black Buff Monster with horns and a pentagram. You see, Buff is a heavy metal fan! I got him to sign all nine toys plus my extra secret toy.

I get home check on eBay what's happening. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Hmmm. May be I'll be $300 invested in Buff. There were a couple of dunnys up there and a print. But nothing else. Looked like collectors were buying, or was there still stock available from the 4,500 pieces produced. May be there are other promotional events yet to begin...Comic Con is soon too...

But a later check on eBay showed promise. One seller has started to list the toys...the secret toy is ~$100. The other 3" toys are about $35-50. Let's see what develops. Patience...

Ed Banger @ Viper Room

Ed Banger Records is killing it. It was a gradual, but constant fixture in my head. First, I saw the t-shirts on the trendiest web retailer's update, aka We Sold Out...(I didn't buy...now they're ~$100+...damn!). Then I saw the fresh Justice D.A.N.C.E. video (sent to me by Alex in Oz I think). Next, the Busy P podcast mix rocked my Audi Bose stereo...oooh. And then Ja brought it on with an invite to Mr Oizo and Kutmah's session at the Viper Room.

The pressure has been building since last summer, leading to Justice getting a distribution deal with Canada's Vice Records. Seems the hype is bubbling over, but there's a lot of heritage behind these Frenchies. See the video clips below. I'm buying my Flat Eric on eBay now...!
