Stevio...LA LA Lovin' It?

I'm British-born Chinese from Bristol, UK. I’m LA-based. I’m a hip hop aficionado. After 15 years in London I moved to LA to pursue a new career and outlook on life.

Back in the 80s I was a DJ. In the 90s I contributed to the world's first street style exhibition at London's Victoria & Albert Museum. In 2011, I had my first interviews published. Today, I’m keeping busy with music, art, photos and writing.

Hong Kong receives Sp

Photobucket

I went wandering in the chic part of town yesterday
. Think Agnes B, Viv Westwood, but the cool thing was seeing the local boutiques. Of course, I printed out the location of a few stores I want to see, especially as I took an empty suitcase to fill?! ;-) IT is a store within a store - like Fred Segals, but without the kitch. This is industrial store interiors and Comme des Garcon window displays. Inside, I saw Jez Scott's drainpipe colourful pants. "I met him" I said to my sister who wasn't at all impressed. Hah!

I searched for those Nike Dunk x Mita's and found a pair, but in size US9. They were the only pair I saw in HK, but I know eBay has them, so no sweat. My fave store had to be the Giordano Concept store. It's like The Gap x Prada! I walked out with a dope leather jacket, shoes, cardigan...I left a stretch drainpipe pants...I don't care how much they look like Prada ;-)

Donkey Kong The surprise find of the night (the stores stay open till 10-11p on a Sunday. Can u imagine Robertson or Melrose doing that?!) was finding the Donkey Kong T-shirt I saw on a dude at a airport recently. I thought, "I got too many Ts, but if it came in a sweatshirt..."And then I found a sweat - black with Pac-Man on it. OMG. I got both of them anyway!

Love to Hate I didn't reach the Billionaire Boys Club store which recently opened in Hong Kong. I'm a hater, but I did want to check out the architecture and design from Japan's Wonderwall (who is behind stores for "A Bathing Ape" (Japan) and "Colette" (France)). I heard the first two floors are devoted to an ice cream parlor theme while the upper floor builds on the BBC astronaut theme. (Here's BBC/Ice Cream's spot in Harvey Nichols (UK)).

Oh Wow! (Murakami Pt II)

I got caught up in Murakami fever! I couldn't help it. As I drove on Sunset downtown the pink Murakami billboard looked down on me and the world...goading me...calling me!

Who else got caught up in Mura-madness? Pharrel and Nigo of Billionaire Boys Club fame were in town and Keanu Reeves was there last night too.

15 minutes of fame.
I cornered Murakami with my UK-imported Kanye West "Stronger" 12".
His assistant looked at me as he was doodling Mr DOB and said, "that's from the UK..."
"You know your stuff", I replied.
"It was my project", she said as she moved Murakami through the crowd that was closing in.

He's famous. I'm famous ;-)

Halloween goblins and ghouls
I loved that it was Halloween weekend. As Britt said, it's an excuse for all the girls to dress like hoes! Hah, love it! There were some freaky folks out at the Murakami show...but I was too shy to get pics of all of them. Which are your faves...mine have to be the "Kitty girls", for all the right reasons. ;-)

Louis Vuitton x Murakami
I survived the night without getting my LV jacket confiscated by the LV brand police...nope, mine wasn't made in Paris! (Paris wasn't cool enough in the 90s to design my velour LV baseball jacket. Hahhaa.) But, in the apres-party Japanese restaurant I had an incident with a Chinese girl and a glass of water. I was not best pleased!

A bit more trivia...I just read that Pharrel was LV's face for 2006 and BBC designed a range of sunnies for LV.

Special thanks to: Brandon Shigeta and Eric Nakamura (Giant Robot) for the additional pictures.

Nooo way...BBC dig in the archives for $2,500

How much will people pay for Billionaire's Boy Club stuff? How about $2,500 (euro 1,900) for a leather jacket? I found this whilst checking out 'We Sold Out', a great French store from Colette and Lamjc.

But, this is no ordinary coat...it's a copy of the B-Boy New York classic, aka 'buff jacket'....I bought my original one in the summer of 1988 in LES/Chinatown during my first trip to NYC.

Picture this: 100F (30c) heat, me in the back of this Jewish-run leather store in the LES:
"Do you have any goose jackets?", I ask.
"Hooose jakcets?", was the reply...
"No...", I exclaimed, "Goose..!" as I flapped my arms like a bird's wings.
The owner went into the back of the store and pulled out my polished black leather, V-quilt, Double Goose Country. It's made in Korea, but when I was in Seoul in 1994-5 I never saw any for sale ;-)

This jacket is one of my treasures from the ol' skool. I lent it to the Victoria & Albert Museum for the Streetstyle exhibition in back in 1994. I found a book with the collection in and this photo of the outfit I put together, including my leather adidas track pants and adidas Run DMC sweatshirt.

I was inspired and looked on eBay for leather goose-down jackets. Yeah, I know I live in LA, but this is historic! Anyway, I found one ~ and it was size 'Small' ~ like mine in the pic shown here. The main difference is this one is a 'box'-quilt, not a V-quilt ~ look closely ;-). But, they are all a piece of 80s NYC! Amazing!

I thought to myself, "how much is this worth now? How much is it to me, and what's a good price?" Here's my approximation: 1988 my jacket was $200. So, 20 years later how much is this deadstock, totally hard to find jacket worth? How much considering one of my new adidas jackets was $300. Ummm. Finger in the air guestimate: "$400"..."$500"..."$600"...I settled for "$700" in Ezsniper as there was a guy in the UK interested and those pesky Brits ;-) have a GBP1/USD2 exchange rate, so I had to step it up! Anyway, I won the coat for $489, but I was ready to spend a chunk!
