Beautiful Losers comes to downtown L.A.

Aaron Rose's 2008 film captures the formation of "one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation." And if you want to see it in all its glory on a big screen the Downtown Independent cinema is bringing to you starting tomorrow...but only for a few days!

Barry McGee, Geoff McFetridge and Mike Mills are some of the artists featured in the film. Shepard Fairey is probably the biggest household name artist captured in this film about doing your own thing.

Update After watching Beautiful Losers I realized how little I knew of this downtown New York scene. I'd never heard of the Alleged Gallery and only heard of Espo and Geoff McFetridge from their Nike collabs. Yea, sad I know!

And I wondered why? It's because these artists came from the punk and skate scene when I was following the hip hop and these two subcultures didn't come together. Although, truth-be-told Beastie Boys were punk before they were hip hop. And of course there was Malcolm McLaren, R.I.P., and his role in punk and hip hop.

Beautiful Losers...London

Beautiful Losers is hitting London! If you're in town for the film premiere and party as part of the London Film Festival go check out LA-resident, Squeak E. Clean. He contributed music to the film and a handful of the film's artists are also part of the his record label's N.A.S.A. film/video project.

Catch it whilst you can...Beautiful Losers

Whilst I was traveling I missed the free screening of Beautiful Losers at the cool Nike Montalbán theater, in Hollywood so I'm waiting for a loan of a DVD.

That's always a nice thing to receive in the (e)mail! This invite was especially welcome because I'd heard so much about this film from Brittany and on investigating a bit I found that the prolific photographer Henry Chalfont is featured in the film (he released Subway Art in 1984! with Martha Cooper and directed Style Wars in 1982!! with Tony Silver, RIP). I believe all the featured artists also released limited editions of work to commemorate the release of the film. Some of which was available on a too-trendy webstore I won't name, cause I'm a hater! ;)

So, the bitter-sweet part of this invite is that I gonna miss the performance by Money Mark and the inside peek at The Montalbán, "Nike's radical new concept store and special events venue in Hollywood," as I was gonna be away in NYC. Balls!

But, I won't miss the indy release of Beautiful Losers opening at the Nuart Theatre on August 29th.
