Stevio...LA LA Lovin' It?

I'm British-born Chinese from Bristol, UK. I’m LA-based. I’m a hip hop aficionado. After 15 years in London I moved to LA to pursue a new career and outlook on life.

Back in the 80s I was a DJ. In the 90s I contributed to the world's first street style exhibition at London's Victoria & Albert Museum. In 2011, I had my first interviews published. Today, I’m keeping busy with music, art, photos and writing.

The clubbing capital cities

I found a new club music website which has some cool DJs and clubs streaming content 'live n direct'.

I loved listening to the Colette music and tuning into some clubs in Chicago on Friday night. I thought I'd found the ultimate worldwide clubbing guide and was kind of oddly satisfied that Los Angeles didn't make the grade. But then I noticed that Miami was also missing and Fabric in London was invisible too, so I think that the list is incomplete...oh, well. The quest continues...

Wooly Mammoth...here I come!

I got the skiing itch during March so I kicked off planning a trip with Sheryl who gathered a few companions. So, with five folks in hand I searched online for a condo for $50 each - I recommend Homeaway and VRBO (vacation rentals by owners.)

Our place was compact and bijou and didn't quite sleep five, but we made do. And Sheryl's Mexican food made us feel like we were still in LA :) The slopes were a 10 minute walk up the hill...quite a shock to the system. The chest tightens and the breathes get shallow as the legs get tired. And that was before we even hit the slopes! But as the landlord said, "it's a good work out..."

Not cheap I rented my boots, skis and poles for two days and it came to $65, but add the two-day ski lift pass and it totaled $223. Gulp. You have to get your money's worth when you come and 1/2 day skiing (aka cheaper) only starts at 12.30pm.

Road trip The drive up the CA-14 takes you past some spectacular scenery that makes you feel like you're exploring. We past two small towns, Lone Pine and Independence which were both swarming with police pests. I saw the Red Rock State Park and from the freeway I think you pass some of those red rocks.

Getting the economy flowing

I went along to the first "Cash Only" sample sale in Hollywood today organized by Back Side Records in Burbank.

Whilst everyone waited patiently outside Cinespace at 10am (the earliest I've been out of the house for a while) I watched the police cordon off Hollywood Blvd. What's that? Filming on a Saturday? Nope, it was for an anti-war protest accompanied by mounted police.

Once inside there was cool stuff from Heavy Hitters and SSUR had fresh stuff, but when everyone else was $5-$10-$20 SSUR had $125 jumpers. No doubt they had the quality gear there with handfinished jumpers, but no one was feeling those prices. Even though that "Jaws" knitted sweater was dope!

I started off slowly with the $5 Ts and got chatting to Scottie at Ubiquity Records who have launched a bunch of t-shirt designs. Then I found Money Mosic Mayhem (I think from the O.C.) who had this jacket with the LV square pattern on. I tried it on...it fitted. They didn't have a mirror so I got the dude to try it on...it looked alright. So I haggled him down to $50! Last one.

My planning failed The plan was to go, look, see and leave. The buying part happened accidently! Hahaaa. There's a party at Cinespace tonight as part of the event and it concludes tomorrow. I'm sure I could easily spend another $80 so I'm staying away!

This is hip-hop....Kid Cudi

I hear Kid Cudi is #2 on the UK charts...He's on rotation here in LA. Even with some words oddly beeped out, this tune is a banger.

If you're looking for an acoustic version Little Boots gives us the Brit version excursion! Here's her blog.

Check all that apply...

When a rapper makes music/films/anime/video games you know they've arrived! And RZA has to be one of the most consistently innovative hip-hop artists in the game being the lynch pin for the Wutang Clan, working with Tarantino on Kill Bill and Jim Jarmusch on Ghost Dog. His latest venture is to work with Samuel Jackson on the anime Afro Samurai airing on Spike TV in the US.

But drive around LA and you'll see Afro Samurai billboards beckoning you to take your eyes away from the cars in front of you! Yep, the video game is out this month too, along with the soundtrack to go with it. It's gonna be beats and blood!

Kofie, 01 Gallery

I got lost downtown (again) looking for the 01 Gallery for Kofie's opening show.

But if you're expecting the hip-hop graffiti as we know it, be pleasantly surprised. Kofie's draftsman style is refreshing retro and modern at the same time. It's amazing how his work on display changes moods with the colors that he uses. It was really apparent looking at the work side by side.

Kofie's collaborations decorate LA's streets and are immediately identifiable, but his afiliation wasn't totally clear to me. This interview from Canned Goods explains alot about the man and the artist. From it, I learnt Kofie's down with a bunch of crews, including West Coast Artists which is also Risk's crew.

I spent some time chatting to Kofie about the tribute print he did of Afrika Bambaataa. I've still got a signed poster from in 2004 from the Levi's Jack-It graffiti show Slick put together. Dope! (Pics below.) The elusive Gajin fujita's work was there too. Fresh!

If you want to see more of Kofie's work this is a nice website.

Make way for the S-O-V

Lady Sovereign came to LA's The Echo last month, after getting delayed in New York. Strep throat or something ;)

Anyway, the 5-foot north-west Londoner was welcomed by an energetic crowd who loved her The Cure cover and the classic "Love Me or Hate Me". I was there with my new (Xmas pressie) Flip video camera... it took me a minute to get the edited video up online. The quality's much better than my (old skool) Canon S500. What do you think?

Who's your stylist?! I couldn't work out what the knitted hat, smiley "acid" face t-shirt and gold rope chain was saying about her, but if it's new rave, wasn't that over before it began?!

Her music is catchy, her videos are a little inconsistent, but she's met Jay-Z and Usher and was signed to Def Jam by Mr Beyonce Knowles, so we gotta respect that. Let's forget about her slightly odd public behavior and antagonistic persona, eh? Is she the Gordon Ramsey of UK grime/rap? :)
