Kofie, 01 Gallery
I got lost downtown (again) looking for the 01 Gallery for Kofie's opening show.
But if you're expecting the hip-hop graffiti as we know it, be pleasantly surprised. Kofie's draftsman style is refreshing retro and modern at the same time. It's amazing how his work on display changes moods with the colors that he uses. It was really apparent looking at the work side by side.
Kofie's collaborations decorate LA's streets and are immediately identifiable, but his afiliation wasn't totally clear to me. This interview from Canned Goods explains alot about the man and the artist. From it, I learnt Kofie's down with a bunch of crews, including West Coast Artists which is also Risk's crew.
I spent some time chatting to Kofie about the tribute print he did of Afrika Bambaataa. I've still got a signed poster from in 2004 from the Levi's Jack-It graffiti show Slick put together. Dope! (Pics below.) The elusive Gajin fujita's work was there too. Fresh!
If you want to see more of Kofie's work this is a nice website.
